This Vice President of Bellarmine’s Pioneer Class of 1954 left a gift in his will to Bellarmine for scholarships. Lutes was an inspiration to his classmates as he completed his studies on time and with honors despite being visually impaired.
A Courier Journal article from that time describes how Lutes would ride the bus from Bardstown to Bellarmine each day, take notes using a newly developed pocket braille writer, and complete his assignments with the help of his sister Mary Imogene Lutes who would read his assignments to him.
From Bellarmine, he went on to become one KY’s first visually impaired computer programmers and worked for the State in Frankfort for over 40 years.
